Cathedral Arts Sponsors Organ Recital and Master Class

February 20 and 21

Our Cathedral Arts will present one of North America’s most exciting organists, Ken Cowan, in a recital and master class. Cowan will present a recital on the Cathedral’s magnificent Casavant organ on Sunday, February 21, at 4:00 p.m. Cowan will also be presenting a master class on Saturday, February 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Central Iowa Chapter of The American Guild of Organists has generously provided sponsorship for the master class in the Chapter’s ongoing mission to engage young organists. Participants in the master class will include organ students from Iowa colleges and universities. Both events are free and open to the public.

Ken Cowan is one of North America’s finest concert organists. Praised for his dazzling artistry, impeccable technique and imaginative programming by audiences and critics alike, he maintains a rigorous performing schedule which takes him to major concert venues across America, Canada and Europe. He has wowed audiences in some of the nation’s most prestigious venues including our own Grace Cathedral (San Francisco), Philadelphia’s Orchestra Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), the Mormon Tabernacle, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame (Paris), and many others.

A native of Thorold, Ontario, Canada, Mr. Cowan received the Master’s degree and Artist Diploma from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, studying organ with Thomas Murray (who has also performed at St. Paul’s). Prior to attending Yale, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied with John Weaver.

Mr. Cowan is Assistant Professor of Organ at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, NJ, where he was recently awarded the 2008 Rider University Distinguished Teaching Award. Previous positions have included Associate Organist and Artist in Residence at Saint Bartholomew’s Church (Episcopal), New York City, Assistant Organist posts at St. James Episcopal Church, the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin (Episcopal) in New York City, and Saint Clements’ Church in Philadelphia. He has also been on the roster of Associate Organists for the famous Wanamaker Grand Court organ in Philadelphia.
