Our prayer for music ministry is that God would use the gifts and skills we have and mold us into His people.

In the choice and preparation of music for worship, ours is not a ministry of personal preferences, but rather one of making choices based upon the needs of others.  Where our "cathedral" identity comes into play, however, is in how we do our music.  Whatever the style, we wrap our hearts and voices around it, and endeavor to do it well.  God will use what God will use.

The Choirmaster

Rebecca Gruber is Choirmaster of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral. She conducts the Cathedral Choir in weekly Eucharist and has the honor to prepare choral evensong services with the professional choir in residence, the Howells Scholars. Dr. Gruber administers the Cathedral Arts Series at St. Paul’s, whose offerings include children’s choirs, jazz, nationally recognized organists, chancel opera, major choral works and chamber music. Dr. Gruber is often heard as soprano soloist in oratorio and recital, and she maintains an active voice studio in Des Moines.  She is also the Artistic Director/Conductor of the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus.

Dr. Gruber enjoys conducting festivals and clinics for musicians throughout the country. Recent engagements have included the American Baptist Summer Music Conference in Greenlake, Wisconsin and C. A. C. T. U. S. (Creative Arts Camp-- Together Under the Sun) in Des Moines. She conducted the Des Moines Elementary Honor Choir, the Southwest Iowa Honor Choir, Choristers Guild Children's Choir Festival in Rochester, Minnesota, and the Richner-Strong Church Music Institute at Colby College in Maine.

In addition to her work in church, Dr. Gruber has spent significant time in academia. She holds a Master of Sacred Music from Perkins School of Theology, a Master of Music in choral conducting from Southern Methodist University, a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska. Her undergraduate degree in voice/music education is from Simpson College. In 1995, she returned to Simpson as a member of the choral/voice faculty, a position which she held for seven years. Professional affiliations include The American Choral Directors Association, Choristers Guild, The College Music Society, Chorus America, and the Association of American University Women.
