What is COOL CONGREGATIONS?
Cool Congregations is a program of
Iowa Interfaith Power and Light.
The goal is to educate faith communities about global warming and to
encourage them to take steps to solve the problem in their homes and
in their institutional buildings, as well as to work on policy
issues at all levels.
What is a CARBON FOOTPRINT?
Our carbon footprint represents the effect we have on
the climate through the total amount of greenhouse gases we generate
when we burn fossil fuels to power our homes or to travel, or that
are generated in the creation of the products we buy.
The Cool Congregations program was launched at St.
Paul's on Earth Day, April 22, 2007. In the months following,
a number of households pledged to reduce the effect they have on
climate change through their use of fossil fuels (carbon
footprints). We continue to encourage other homes and
businesses affiliated with St. Paul's to join this effort.
Since then, the church has also instituted a
recycling program for bulletins and a fund-raiser by the youth group
involving the sale of compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Cool Congregations is an effort to show our
stewardship of God's creation. |
